REWRITE IN PROGRESS (15-01-2025)

This article is currently hard to read. Please be patient while I rewrite it!
In the meantime, read on How to Use the Gender Template or refer to my other source code guides.

Before you read!

This article is a work in progress written at 3AM, meaning it's imperfect. You can edit the page to add more information or to make it more clear, as long as you're a confident editor with experience. Do not change information indicated with this icon: File:Coin Favicon.gif.

Things to do: add definitions and external links, show effects of wikitext, and keep the friendly and informal tone throughout the entire article.

Hello, new editors! I'm Brojogon, one of the seasoned editors and I will show you how, under an hour, you can gain the skills that took me a year to acquire. In this article, I'll teach you how to create a new page about a gender in source code! File:Spinning-Star Favicon.gif

Before we begin, let's learn about the reference command. It's extremely important when using it, but after that section, I won't mention how references work anymore.

Reference Command

All genders have varying amounts of documentation. Some genders, like pangender, have tons of people explaining what it means and making flags for it, while others, such as mimangienby, only has the coiner explaining what it means or making a flag for it. This is why various types of reference commands can be used, including:

Known Citations

These are the kinds of wikitexts you should use when you find information on a link that is useful, and they look like this: <ref name="Anything">https://www.example.com</ref>, with "Anything" being the name of the reference, and example.com being the link where you found the information. If you use the information found in a link again, but you're too lazy to define that same link. Worry not, <ref name="Anything" /> is here! Keep in mind that when you take information from multiple links, it's important to name the reference commands something different. This way, many links can be used seperately and seamlessly.

Unknown Citations

When it comes to missing information, like the person who made the alternative fruitgender flag, you might ask: what link should be cited? None actually! Instead, we type {{citation needed|Reason}}. Not to mention the reason is totally optional, so just type {{citation needed}} at the end of a questionable entry and you can call it a day.

Bonus: How I Cite Websites File:Coin Favicon.gif

The way I cite websites(for the first time) is different from the average editor. The template I use looks like this: <ref name="coin">[User], January 1st 2025. ''[Title]'' ([Archive])</ref>

  • "Coin" refers to the name of the reference command, since I typically cite coiners.
  • [User] refers to the person who created the link/post. It's where I hyperlink the user's profile and determine their social media by using the {{icon}} template. For example: [https://www.tumblr.com/examplepersonblog Examplepersonblog]{{icon|tumblr}}.
  • January 1st 2025 is self-explanatory, except I use the superscript command to make letters tiny.
  • [Title] is the part where I hyperlink a post, such as [https://ask-pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/post/178195740933 New Mogai Terms!!] and I always make sure they respect title case.
  • ([Archive]) gives me the potential to hyperlink an archive, and we need to archive things because contrary to popular belief, not everything is on the Internet forever. Sites I use to keep a page forever are Wayback Machine, archive.today, Perma.cc and Megalodon.

Template

All pages of the gender wiki must respect a specific template. I simplified the examplegender templates into this universal base I use for myself. From now on, this post will teach you how to fill it. Here is the base:

 {{Gender
  |coined_by=
  |coining_date=
  |image1=
  |symbol1=
  |caption1=
  |caption2=
  |type=
  |system=
  |exclusivity=
  |alternate_names=
  }}
 ''''{{FULLPAGENAME}}''' is a [[gender identity]] in which one's gender is
 ==Common Definitions==
 ==Subsets==
 Subsets of ExampleGender include:
 *
 ==References==
 <references />
 ==See Also==
 *
 [[Category:Gender Identities]]

Gender Template

Let's fill the {{Gender}} text first. The infobox contains many parameters, which I'll teach you how to fill. The File:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif symbol means a given parameter is optional to fill.

  • Coined_by tells who the coiner is. If possible, use the {{icon}} template at the end of the coiner's username, and don't forget to use the reference command. For example: coined_by=ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="Anything" />. If a gender has more than one definition. (Tumblr will always be used as the default social media, but that doesn't mean there aren't other options. If the desired social media isn't available in the {{icon}} template, omit the template.)
  • Coining_date tells when the coiner came up with their obscure gender idea. Use the armed eagle (American) language by typing the date in the February 30th, 2025 format, and don't forget to put a reference command there too.

File:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gifImage1 and Symbol1File:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif

  • Image1 and Symbol1 determine what kind of image will be shown, flag(s) for the former and symbol(s) for the latter, if any are available. For example, image1=ExamplePicture.webp. If a gender identity has two or three flags/symbols, fill out the symbol using the text below, by replacing ExamplePicture.webp with the desired image. File:? Favicon.gifFAQ:How to upload a file?File:? Favicon.gif
    • File:Coin Favicon.gif: While the Gender Wiki is primarly in American English, using the term "Alternative" rather than "Alternate"(the "pew pew yeehaw" American version) is more international-friendly in my opinion.
<gallery>
ExamplePicture.webp|Original
ExamplePicture.webp|Alternate 1
ExamplePicture.webp|Alternate 2
</gallery>
  • When a gender has two/three flags or symbols, there is also additional text to add, right in between ==Subsets==Subsets of gender include: * and ==References==. Remove excess sentences if less than three flags/symbols exist. Replace gender, flag/symbol with flag or symbol, ExampleUser, January 1st, 2025, and if appropriate, reference command names.
==History==
The original gender flag/symbol was created by ExampleUser on January 1st, 2025.<ref name="one" /> The first alternate gender flag/symbol was created by ExampleUser on January 1st, 2025,<ref name="two" /> and the second alternate gender flag/symbol was created by on January 1st, 2025.<ref name="three" />
  • Sometimes, there is only one or two flags/symbols, and the image is scary compared to the rest of the page For example, hallofrilled is described as a gender about halloween frills, very cute, but the flag contains a spider, not very cute. I came up with the idea about using this template in the image1 or symbol1 fields: (I ain't capping)
<gallery>
Content_Warning.png|ExampleFear
ExamplePicture.webp|Original
ExamplePicture.webp|Alternate 1
ExamplePicture.webp|Alternate 2
</gallery>
  • File:Coin Favicon.gif: This is just a personal tip but it's still super important. Please make sure to determine what the ExampleFear is, because some people who are not scared of the material will click away because of alarmism, while people who are scared of it will skip the warning not knowing what comes next. There might even be a fellow editor who removes the warning because they personally don't see what's wrong with the flag.

The rest

  • Caption1File:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif and caption2File:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif tell who made the singular flag/symbol. Flag for the former and symbol for the latter. You typically fill it with: GenderName Flag/Symbol by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}
  • Type and systemFile:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif tell the umbrella term the gender identity belongs to. Fill in the parameter(s) by typing the name of an umbrella term, and putting it in brackets twice, like this: [[ExampleUmbrellaName]].
    • File:Coin Favicon.gif: In the type parameter, I always put ([[Gender Identity]]) at the end of the field. For example, I type [[ExampleUmbrellaName]] ([[Gender Identity]]). I do this because I also edit pages about gender modality and other queer identities.
    • File:Coin Favicon.gif: What I put in the system parameter is always different from the type parameter. For example, in the affectanthro page, system=[[Affectian System]], but type=[[Faunagender]] ([[Gender Identity]]). Both umbrella terms are animal-related genders, but one is a system, while the other isn't.
  • ExclusivityFile:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif and alternate_namesFile:Purple-Spiral Favicon.gif are self-explanatory, but make sure this information is cited with a reference command, because editors don't make things up, they collect info.

Definitions

''''' is a [[gender identity]] in which one's gender is ... That's always how a gender's definition begins. Make sure it can summarize the gender identity in three sentences or less. Also, type the gender's name at the beginning of the definition between three apostrophes, like '''this'''!

When it comes to ==Common Definitions==, simply use the {{Quote}} template in a way that matches this example: {{Quote|Definition|ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}|2025<nowiki><ref name="coin" />}}

Subsets + See Also

Subsets is an optional section where you can put genders more specific than the one this page targets. The asterisk(*) is what creates a bulleted list, so just skip paragraphs and duplicate the bullets. Then, type the gender names after each asterisk/bullet. The list should look something like this:

* [[Demiboy]]
* [[Demigirl]]
* [[Demienby]]

Subsets is optional, but See Also isn't, requiring a bulleted list. However, if you will keep Subsets, remember to replace ExampleGender with the gender's name.

Categories

At the end of the base is a paragraph saying [[Category:Gender Identities]]. There are so much more categories to add, but since I'm not a monster willing to drain your stamina, I'll give you a few basic ones you can use. [[Category:Transgender]], [[Category:Nonbinary]], [[Category:Xenogender]] and [[Category:Xenine]] are categories that match a huge majority of gender identities, so feel free to paste these in the last paragraphs of the base, especially if you like helping Miiohau. (admin whose hobby is categorizing pages)

Extra

FIlling in the base is not the only thing you may do. Here are some extra elements you can add to the page depending on its quirks:

Multiple Definitions

If the gender has multiple definitions, the definition should be in this format. Write each definition at the end of the hashtags, similar to the asterisks/bulleted list.

'''''' is a [[gender identity]] with two definitions: # #

It's also important to note who coined each definition and when. This is an example you put in the {{Gender}} template. (Other fields were only removed for simplicity. Remember some are still mandatory.)

{{Gender
   |coined_by=First:ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="one" /> Second:ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="two" />
   |coining_date=FirstJanuary 1st, 2025<ref name="one" /> Second:February 30th, 2050<ref name="two" />
   }}

Four Flags or More

If the gender has four flags or more, put this example between ==Subsets== and its lists, and ==References==.

== Gallery ==
<gallery>
 ExamplePicture.webp|Original ExampleGender Flag by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="one"
 ExamplePicture.webp|First Alternate ExampleGender Flag by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="two"
 ExamplePicture.webp|Second Alternate ExampleGender Flag by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="three"
 ExamplePicture.webp|Third Alternate ExampleGender Flag by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="four"
 </gallery>

File:Coin Favicon.gif: I'm part of the minority of editors who use the example below instead.

 ExamplePicture.webp|Second ExampleGender Flag by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="two"

 ExamplePicture.webp|Fourth ExampleGender Flag by ExampleUser{{icon|tumblr}}<ref name="four"
 </gallery>

My Other Bonuses File:Coin Favicon.gif

Some bonus things I only notice myself doing, and that I wish more editors did: (but that aren't mandatory)

  • I always hyperlink a username (e.g. [https://www.tumblr.com/examplepersonblog Examplepersonblog]{{icon|tumblr}}) instead of leaving it without a link. The link is usually an archived version of the profile, as many accounts get deleted easily or change drastically over time.
  • When a gender is undefined, meaning it has no quotes, I use my custom template to tell editors to find a definition on the Internet.
  • When using the "See Also" category, I never list a gender that was previously mentioned in the page. For example, in the affectale page, I list unicorngender and dragongender
  • I archive every link. Everything. Sites I use to keep a page forever are Wayback Machine, archive.today, Perma.cc and Megalodon.

Templates/Notices to Use

To use a template, surround its name with brackets, like {{This}}. Templates are useful to indicate important information an editor or reader must know about before reading or editing the page.
