Tomgirls are male-identifying individuals who express themselves in a traditionally feminine way, be it via clothing, activities, or lifestyle. Tomgirls do not inherently fall under the transgender umbrella, as gender expression and identity are separate categories. They also do not fall under the femboy umbrella, as they typically express themselves in a less feminine manner. An example would include only having a partially feminine personality and not having a drastically feminine appearance, whilst also conforming to traditional masculine roles. Tomgirls are also the counterpart to tomboys, females/girls who express themselves in a masculine/manly manner. Historically, being a tomgirl has been associated with being gay, but this is now recognized as inaccurate and a stereotype.[1]
