Template:Cite web/doc

This template is used to cite online content as sources on LGBTQIA+ Wiki. Please use this template instead of plain links or bare links (like [http://www.example.org Example] or [http://www.example1.org] for Examples [1]).

We also have templates for commonly-cited online contents:

For sources available online but first published in print, see {{Cite_print}}.

Usage

Copy-and-paste the template code into an article's reference note or manually type it out. URL and title are the only required parameters. Fill in as many fields as you can and delete/omit any that you don't use.

If typing it, either a space or an underscore may be used to call the template (Cite web or Cite_web). Spaces between parameters are optional for readability (ex. {{Cite_web|url=The URL|title=The Title}} versus {{Cite web |url=The URL |title=The Title}}). The parameters can be put in any order since they will display in the predetermined order regardless.

Just the required
{{Cite_web |url= |title=}}
Commonly-used form (when author and date of publication are known, site is named, and providing a backup link)
{{Cite_web |url= |title= |author= |date= |site= |archivedate= }}
All parameters (delete the ones you don't need)
{{Cite web |url= |title= |language= |format= |author= |site= |date= |publisher= |quote= |speaker= |detail= |archivedate= |archiveurl= |nolive= |nobackup=}}

Parameters

Required parameters

  • url: URL of online item.
  • title: Title of online item. Automatically put inside quotation marks. If the item is untitled (such as a social media post), put exactly that: |title=Untitled

Optional parameters

  • site: The website hosting the specific item or that a single item is part of. To include a link, use a standard [URL name] plainlink. Automatically italicized. For example: [https://lgbtqia.fandom.com LGBTQIA+ Wiki] becomes LGBTQIA+ Wiki If the parameter isn't provided, the template extracts the domain and links it, ex. <lgbtqia.fandom.com>.
  • language: Language of the publication (if not in English). Automatically prefaced with the word "in".
  • format: Format, if not in the implied default (HTML/webpages), e.g. PDF, Tumblr post, YouTube video.
  • author: Author(s), whether individuals or organizations, who wrote the content. There sometimes isn't an identifiable writer. May be wikilinked.
  • date: Date of publication, preferably in ISO 8601 YYYY-MM-DD format, e.g. 2006-02-17.
  • publisher: Publisher, if any or it differs from the name of the website. (Not usually needed.)
  • speaker: A quote speaker's name, such as an interview subject or member of a panel.
  • quote: Relevant quote from online item. Automatically surrounded by quotation marks.
  • detail: Any further detail(s) of note, such as video producers or hosts, translators, or anything not otherwise covered by other parameters.

Backup parameters

Please include one of these backup parameters to create a link to an archived version of the online content:

  • archivedate: This parameter uses the timestamp feature of Internet Archive. The URL supplied earlier in the template, along with archivedate, will provide a link to Internet Archive. The timestamp portion of an Internet Archive URL looks like YYYYMMDD######. For instance, in:
https://web.archive.org/web/20240425143402/https://lgbtqia.fandom.com/wiki/LGBTQIA%2B_Wiki
it would be |archivedate=20240425143402
  • archiveurl: If Internet Archive does not work for the link in question, you can use archiveurl to provide a full URL to another backup website, such as archive.today.
Optional backup-related parameters, when applicable
  • nolive=1: If the content is no longer available at its original address, this adds the note (original link down) next to the title and does not create a link to that address.
  • nobackup=1: If no backup link can be found, or archiving isn't possible for reasons (ex. require a login to view, archive bots can't crawl it), this adds the note (backup link not available).

Note that we don't use access date here because the backup supplies the means to review the content as it appeared when accessed. If there is neither a live link nor a backup, please find another source, because nobody can verify the source without either of them.
