Neurogender

Neurogender is both a gender identity and an umbrella term to describe when someone's gender is somehow linked to their neurotype, mental disorder, or neurological conditions.

Neurogenders are sometimes considered to be xenogenders as well.

Important notes about neurogender and terms under its umbrella:

Not everybody with a neurodivergency identifies with a neurogender. For example, not all autistic people identify with autigender. Only those that feel as if their gender can only be explained in the context of being autistic identify with it.

These aren't neurodivergency as a gender, but a gender affected by neurodivergency, or only able to be understood in the context of neurodivergency.

Most agree that these genders are exclusive to neurodivergent people, while some argue that gender identity cannot and should not be policed, so neurogenders are somewhat controversial.

The rules around neurodiversity apply here. Namely, neurodiversity only needs treatment if it affects their quality of life.

Flags

The original neurogender flag was designed by Tumblr user aflutteringlaney^[1]^[2] on August 13, 2014.^[1] The color meanings are as follows: red, green, blue and purple represent the spectrum of different neurotypes and gender identities that neurodivergent individuals have; black represents the aromantic and asexual spectrums; the infinity symbol represents neurodiversity.

The first two alternate neurogender flags were designed by Tumblr user kasatate1 on February 21, 2023.^[4]

The third alternate neurogender flag was designed by Fandom user NightsetRosewall on April 20, 2023.

The fourth alternate neurogender flag was designed by Fandom user Fr*dayHatesYou on May 16, 2023.

The fifth alternate neurogender flag was designed by Fandom user ~jupitersf0rest~ on May 22nd, 2025.^[5]

Symbol

The neurogender symbol was designed by system-lgbt on Tumblr on July 28, 2018.^[3]^[6] The symbol was based on the disability flag by capriuni.^[7] It is also the symbol for Pallas, the Roman god of war, victory, and power, whose asteroid is associated with intellectual power, critical thinking, cognitive skills and how one's mind is mapped out, in astrology.^[8]

ADHDgender

ADHDgender, also known as ADDgender (both names may be separate depending on the individual), is a label for those whose ADHD or ADD affects their gender and/or gender experience in some way.

Affectugender

Affectugender is defined as a gender that is affected by one’s neurodivergency, especially fluctuating moods (e.g. feeling like a boy during depressive episodes and feeling like a demigirl during happy/manic episodes).

Alcogender

Alcoholicgender, also known as alcogender, a gender that is influenced by one's alcoholism. A person may identify with one gender when they are under the influence of alcohol, and another gender when they are sober. This label should only be used by people with alcoholism.

Autimain

Autimain is a neurogender exclusive to autistic people. It can be described as a male gender through a genderless lens. Someone who is autimain may feel male while also having a disconnect from gender all together due to neurodivergence. It is not inherently nonbinary, as some autimain may still feel like a binary cis or trans male despite the disconnect. Others may also identify with labels such as autibxy, boy+, agender man, or demiboy.

Autigender

Autigender, also known as autismgender, is a gender identity in which one's gender experience is influenced by or linked to one's autism. (Autigender is not autism as a gender, but rather is having a gender that is influenced by their autism.)

Bipolargender

Bipolargender is a neurogender identity in which one's gender is affected by one's bipolar disorder.

Cyclogender

Cyclogender describes a bipolar person whose gender identity is tied to what type of episode (manic, hypomanic, depressive, mixed, etc.) they are experiencing at that moment.

Bigirlpolar

Bigirlpolar, also known as biwomanpolar, biladypolar, or bifinpolar, is a neurogender identity, and subset of bipolargender, in which one's gender is usually void but fluctuates between feminine identities during mania, and/or feels like a flat state of female or demigirl when their depression hits.

Biboypolar

Biboypolar, also known as bimanpolar, biguypolar, or biminpolar, is a neurogender identity, and subset of bipolargender, in which one's gender is usually void but fluctuates between masculine identities during mania, and/or feels like a flat state of male or demiboy when their depression hits.

Bianpolar

Bianpolar, also known as binonpolar, bianpolar, or bininpolar, is a neurogender identity, and subset of bipolargender, in which one's gender is usually void but fluctuates between neutral identities during mania, and/or feels like a flat state of non-binary when their depression hits.

Bivoidpolar

Bivoidpolar, also known as binonpolar, biNApolar, or biNOpolar, is a neurogender identity, and subset of bipolargender, in which one's gender is usually present but fluctuates between genderless identities during mania, and/or feels like a flat state of agender or gendervoid when their depression hits.

Bordergender

Bordergender, also known as borderfluid, is defined as a fluctuating gender experienced exclusively by people with BPD. A gender identity lacking a firm grasp on ones identity, while still experiencing gender, to varying degrees, but having trouble pinning it down to just one label or identity. Having the sense of grasping at labels as much as possible to describe a gender we keep questioning because we keep second guessing our sense of selves and, consequentially, our sense of gender.

Caedogender

Caedogender, also known as caedgender, is a gender identity which has been "cut away" by a traumatic event; a gender that was once felt but has been damaged or lost due to trauma.

Cavusgender

Cavusgender is a gender identity for people with depression. One can feel one gender when not depressed and another when depressed. A gender felt whilst depressed can be attached as a suffix (e.g. cavusboy, cavusgirl, cavusnonbinary, cavusace.)

Cloudgender

Cloudgender is defined as a gender which cannot be fully realized or seen clearly due to depersonalization/derealization disorder.

Corugender

Corugender, also known as flashgender, is defined as a gender identity that changes during and around flashbacks.

Foggender

Foggender is defined as a gender which is close to a certain gender, but cannot be pinpointed due to brainfog (a lack of concentration or wakefulness associated with ADHD, fibromyalgia, depression, etc.)

Genderanxious

Genderanxious is a gender that is undefined because the act of finding a label, or of having a gender, is a trigger for anxiety.

Genderdisordered

Genderdisordered is a gender that is heavily influenced by, or unable to be defined because of, disorganized thinking or a thought disorder.

Genderfake

Genderfake is the feeling that your gender is part of your hallucinations or delusions.

Gendermute

Gendermute is a label for selectively mute people describing a gender that can only be expressed at certain times or in safe environments.

Genderwhat

Genderwhat is when one is unable to understand the concept of gender or of having a gender, due to neurodivergence.

Illusogender

Illusogender is when one knows they’re a certain gender, but there’s still the feeling of ‘fakeness’ there, either due to neurodivergency and/or due to outside pressure from parents, society, etc. These feelings and/or pressures can be part of the gender experience .

Lipsigender

Lipsigender is a gender which, when thought about, triggers bouts of depression.

Ludogender

Ludogender is defined as a gender which has a core, but the individual mirrors (copies) the genders of other individuals. A neurogender mirror Gender is a similiar gender, non-neurodivergent people can use.

Nesciogender

Nesciogender, also known as nesciōgender, is defined as a gender one is not completely sure of due to one’s neurotype disallowing a clear understanding of the concept, but has a vague sense of what it could be; i.e. nescioboy, nescioagender, etc.

Neuro-

Having a gendered feeling while feeling disconnected from gender due to neurodivergency. This is a prefix (e.g. neuroboy, neurogirl, neurononbinary, neurofluid...).

Neuroboy

Neuroboy is a gender identity and neurogender in which one is connected to masculinity, but disconnected from gender due to one's neurodivergency.

Neurogirl

Neurogirl is a neurogender identity (exclusive to neurodivergent people) in which one is connected to femininity, while simultaneously or alternately disconnected from gender or the concept of gender due to neurodivergency.

Neurobxy

Neurobxy, also known as neuromxn, is when one's gender feels like a boy but because of their neurodivergence, it feels as if it is disconnected in an agender way. This gender may be fluid, flux, demiboy, or any combo of mingender and genderless (either agin or agia)

Neurogxrl

Neurogxrl (or neurowxman) is when one's gender feels like a girl but because of their neurodivergence, it feels as if it is disconnected in an agender way. This gender may be fluid, flux, demigirl, or any combo of fingender and genderless (either agin or agia).

Neuroflux

Neuroflux is a gender identity in which one's gender experience that - due to neurodivergency - is detached from one's self, and also fluctuates in intensity. Neuroflux may also have fluidity along with it, in which case it can be called neurofluidflux.

Neurobinary

Neurobinary is a neurogender identity in which one is neurogender and also a binary gender(s).

OC-Gender

OC-Gender, also known as O-Gender, C-Gender, or OCDgender, is a set of gender identities that are heavily influenced or defined by one’s OCD. The variations describe a feeling that one’s gender is influenced or defined by obsessions only, by compulsions only, or by both obsessions and compulsions.

Posigender/Negagender

Posigender, also known as negagender, is a feeling that one’s gender is defined by or influenced by positive (posigender) or negative (negagender) symptoms of their schizophrenia.

Skhizeingender

Skhizeingender is a gender that is strongly connected to schizophrenia, or having a gender that is difficult to describe or communicate because of being schizophrenic. This term is exclusive to individuals with schizophrenia or schizophrenia related symptoms. Pronounced: sk-heez-ein-gender

Systemgender

Systemgender is a gender which is defined as a sum of all the genders within a multiple or median system. A nonbinary gender experienced by members of a multiple and/or median system. Other systems can also come up with names. (i.e. headmates all have different nonbinary genders but are looking for something to describe the gender of the system as a whole.)

Systemfluid

Systemfluid describes when one has genders that change depending on who’s fronting.

Traumatagender

Traumatagender, also known as traumatgender, trautgender, or trauatgender, is a gender that varies; it can change a lot, it could be unknown, it could just be there, it could be nonexistent, etc. Whatever it is, it was based from intense trauma. Should only be used by those who have experienced or are going through what they consider intense trauma.

Vaguegender

Vaguegender, also known as gendervague, is defined as a gender identity that is highly influenced by being neurodivergent, and feels undefinable or partly definable because of one’s neurodivergence

Xumgender

Xumgender is defined as never being satisfied with one's gender no matter how well it fits due to self-doubt, causing one to compulsively search and seek out something that fits even better. Gender perfectionism. For neurodivergent folks only, coined with people with anxiety disorders, OCD, and OCPD in mind.
