Initial Designation (ID) refers to the sex assigned to an individual at birth based solely on physical characteristics observed by medical professionals. This term replaces binary-centric language such as "Assigned Male (AMAB)/Female at Birth (AFAB)" and acknowledges that sex is a separate category from gender. ID highlights the arbitrary nature of birth assignments and recognizes that these assignments do not define an individual's authentic gender identity.
