Gender Authenticity Misalignment (GAM) refers to the experience where an individual's internal sense of their authentic gender identity (Verigender) does not align with external factors such as physical characteristics, social expectations, or legal documentation. GAM replaces the concept of "gender incongruence" with a more inclusive, non-pathologizing framework that focuses on self-alignment and authenticity.

Differences from Gender Incongruence and Dysphoria

Framework Focus Limitations GAM Solution
Gender Incongruence Mismatch between gender identity and body Pathologizing and binary-focused Centers on external factors for alignment.
Gender Dysphoria Distress from mismatch between identity and assigned gender Often over-medicalized, with limited cultural inclusivity Emphasizes authenticity over distress.
Gender Authenticity Misalignment (GAM) Misalignment between internal authenticity and external realities None—emphasizes inclusivity and affirmation
