Ipsogender is an intersex-exclusive identity in which an intersex person agrees with the sex they were medically assigned.

Ipsogender differs from intergender in that ipsogender is categorized as a binary gender and a gender modality, while intergender is a nonbinary gender. It differs from cisgender because the person's body initially did not fit within the binary, even though their identity does.

History

Ipsogender was coined by Dr. Cary Gabriel Costello at the blog intersexroadshow on August 5, 2014.[1] It appears that the ipsogender, ispogender man, and ipsogender woman flags were created by Nonbinary Wiki user Ondo on or before June 20, 2023.[2]

Etymology

In chemistry, from which the language of 'cis' and 'trans' isomers originates, there are chemicals based upon a ring structure, called arene rings. When a chemical substitution is made in the same place on the ring, this is referred to as "ipso" substitution. For this reason, the name 'ipsogender' was proposed to be used alongside cisgender and transgender to better describe the intersex experience.[3]
