Gender Arity
Gender arity, also known as leptarity, is a leptive method of classifying gender systems that categorize primary groups of pre-existing gender entries or a pre-established gender base.
Arities
- Nullary: A system in which no gender categories exists. Or a conceptualization of gender that is not linked to any arity at all.
- Unary/monary: A system in which one gender category exists.
- Binary: A system in which two gender categories exist. It is most commonly understood to be male and female, and is present in Western cultures. The terms abinary and non-binary are derived from this, showing a gender that is unrelated to the gender binary.
- Trinary/ternary: A system in which three gender categories exist. It is most commonly understood to be male, female, and a third gender, neutral gender, or androgynous gender. The term atrinary derives from this, showing a gender that is unrelated to the gender trinary. It is present in many ancient cultures, such as ancient Sumerian texts. Trinary systems are also present in some indigenous cultures.
- Quadnary/Quadrinary/Quaternary: A system in which four gender categories exist.
- Quinary/Quinternary/Quintenary: A system in which five gender categories exist. It is present in traditional Bugis culture (including bissu).
- Senary/Hexanary: A system in which six gender categories exist. It is present in traditional Jewish texts.
