Gender Ambiguous
Gender ambiguous, also known as gender ambiguity or sex ambiguous, is a term that describes difficulty determining a person's gender or sex, be it through their expression or appearance, such as physical attributes.
Often confused with androgyny, gender ambiguity is not necessarily identical. Though, someone who is gender ambiguous may possess both feminine and masculine qualities, which may make their gender or sex ambiguous. And though these terms are not inherently synonymous, in many cases, androgyny can often be the cause of an individual's ambiguity, considering that not every androgynous person is ambiguous.
Ambiguity as a trait is most commonly associated with gender, but because it is easier to determine sex than it is to determine gender, (which can also be interpreted as transphobic) the term is usually shortened to ambiguity. However, ambiguity is not the same as sex/gender ambiguity.
It is meant to respect androgynous-presenting people, as they could be of any gender. An example of using this term would be the following:
"Today I saw a gender ambiguous person walking with a very interesting outfit".[1]
