Enby is a term that refers to a non-binary person. Enby is a phonetic pronunciation of the letters NB, an initialism for non-binary, people whose gender is outside of the binary. The word is an equivalent of "boy" or "girl".[2]

Some people who may identify as non-binary are uncomfortable with the word "enby", as it can seem childish or infantilizing. It is advised that you ask permission to use this term on someone. The adult counterpart, equivalent to man or woman, is enban.[2] There are also alternative terms to enby, such as nby, nbi, othri, and joy.[2][3]

Examples:

  • "They are neither a boy nor a girl, but an enby."
  • "My best friend Sam is an enby."
  • "I am dating an enby who makes me feel special."
  • "Actually, I'm an enby!"
