Emojigender
Emojigender is a xenogender identity in which one's gender experience is connected to or best described using emojis. This can include a general connection to emojis, a link to multiple specific emojis, or a strong association with one particular emoji (e.g., feeling that one's gender is most accurately communicated via the 🪱 emoji, sometimes expressed as 🪱 gender).
It does not mean the person's gender is an emoji literally, but rather that emojis serve as a metaphorical or communicative tool to express a gender feeling that falls outside traditional categories like masculine, feminine, or androgynous. Subsets often replace "emoji" with the emoji itself (e.g., gender for a floral or nature-related aesthetic connection).
The concept originated on Tumblr [2] in December 2018 (coined by user xeno-aligned as a subset of Visigender/Pictogender with the exact phrasing "a gender that is best described by an emoji... simply best communicated via an emoji"). A separate but similar definition appeared on FANDOM wikis around 2021, describing it more broadly as "related in some way to emoji(s)" and often tied to neurodivergence or aesthetigenders.
Emojigender falls under the xenogender concept — non-binary identities often described via concepts, objects, animals, aesthetics, or symbols rather than relation to true gender binary. These are highly personal microlabels primarily used in online LGBTQ+ spaces (e.g., Tumblr, Reddit's r/XenogendersAndMore,[3] dedicated wikis).
This gender is not formally recognized in mainstream psychology, medicine, or major LGBTQ+ organizations, and opinions on their validity vary within queer communities and often contested, with some viewing them as helpful for neurodivergent individuals while others criticize them for being overly niche and lacking empirical basis.
