Gender of Rearing, also known as gender of socialization, is a term used to describe the gender that one was identified as when growing up. This is commonly but not always, one's assigned sex. Because society has gender roles that it expects of men and women, young children are often treated differently depending on their perceived gender to prepare them for these roles. Socialization as a particular gender can leave a lasting impact on a person, even though they may identify as a different gender than the one they were raised as.

Common examples of gendered socialization/rearing include:

* Expecting girls to be more mature and polite than boys, or excusing boys’ bad behavior
* Expecting girls to do more household chores
* Expecting boys to hide all emotions aside from anger or humor
* Expecting boys to embrace solitary behaviors and avoid asking for help
* Giving children different toys to play with depending on their perceived gender
Many people consider gender-based differences in raising children to be sexist and unfair towards girls and people raised as girls.
