Not to eb confused with Transvesti.

A Transvestite (or cross-dresser) describes someone who intentionally chooses to wear clothes that are associated with a gender identity or sex different (often opposite) to their own. Common examples include someone who is AMAB that dresses in feminine clothes, or a woman that predominantly wears masculine clothing. It also includes dressing androgynously and wearing both "men's" and "women's" clothes.[3][4][5][6]

History

In the modern day, most transvestites are not transgender and do not want to transition. However, the concept of transvestites pre-dates widespread use of the term transgender, so in the past cross-dressing (particularly drag) was seen as a way for transgender people to express their identity. In these times, the two terms were often used interchangeably.

Transvestite may be viewed as a reclaimed identity, as it is often used in a derogatory manner to discriminate transgender individuals. It is important to ask permission from someone before using this term to refer to them, due to the commonly transphobic connotations that come along with it.
