Man is a gender identity which is seen as part of the gender binary. Man is a term used for adults, and corresponds to the terms boy (for children), male (age neutral/adjective) and often masculinity.

Definitions of man

  • a person whose gender embodies and/or epitomizes masculinity, the gender derived from wolffian phenotypical traits
  • a binary gender associated with, derived from, innate to, or related to being a biological male
  • someone whose personal, internal identity aligns with the societal, attributed, psychological, and some physiological traits that come from the male phenotype
  • someone who intentionally is in accordance with roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes specific and unique to socially constructed qualities uniquely expected from wolffian individuals

Despite common belief, the word "male" is not sex-specific and does not inherently refer to physical biology, although it can. It is the age-neutral form of man/boy and is also the adjective form. It is also used for pleonotic individuals.

Identification and Relation to Sex

Children who are born with penises and testes are often raised with the expectation that they will identify as men, although intersex children may also be assigned to this identity while possessing some but not all of the above characteristics, Men may be cisgender (assigned male or sometimes intersex at birth and identifying as men), transgender (assigned female or sometimes intersex at birth and identifying as men), or non-binary (assigned any sex at birth and identifying as men but not entirely).

Identifying as a man is often associated with "male" sex characteristics such as a penis, testes, narrow hips, a prominent Adam's apple and a low-pitched voice, as well as a traditionally masculine gender expression and gender role, but these are not necessary, and it is still possible to identify as a man without them. It is the male gender that is derived from these traits.

Flags

The man flag was created by Tumblr user Trintinic on December 29, 2017. The dark blue represents those who identify fully as men, light blue represents those who identify partially as men, and white represents multigender individuals who have man as one of their genders. This post has since been deleted.

The male flag was created by acro-pluris on September 18, 2020[1]. There is no known meaning behind this flag. The flag was based on a stamp by DeviantArt user SilenceTheFox[2].

Symbol

The astronomical symbol for Mars is the most common symbol for men. It represents the shield and spear of the Roman god of war, and is also the symbol for iron[10].
